• The most beautiful hike that you've never heard of! The terrain and features of the lake itself are very similar to Chester Lake (a few km down the highway), but the actual hike up to the lake is much much nicer than the hike to Chester.

This is a relatively unknown trail with an unmarked trailhead and as such you won't share it with very many people (as opposed to the hundreds that visit Chester every day in the summer). Be sure to take the extra step of climbing up into Rummel Pass as it is also extremely beautiful and makes the overall trip that much better!
• An early winter family hike up to Rummel Lake on a beautiful day. The trail was icy at the start and the snow gradually got deeper all the way up the pass. Therewas afoot or more of snow at the lake and the lake itself was completely frozen over. Forunately it was a beautiful blue sky day and we had a wonderful hike!
• The hike to larch valley is always spectactular, especially in the fall when the larches turn a golden yellow. We were about two weeks too late to see the best of the show as many of the trees were already barren of needles. It was cool to see a carpet of golden yellow needles on the ground, and we were there on a beautiful blue sky day. It was a great way to end the hiking season before winter hits!

These Gray Jays (aka Whiskey Jacks) were very curious about all the activity on the trail.
Although a conifer, the larch is a deciduous tree and loses its needles in the fall and larch valley is an amazing place to see a valley full of the trees all changing color at the same time.
• We went to Kananaskis to go looking for wild Strawberries. I mean to go hiking. No, really it was to look for berries. We hiked the Chester Lake Trail in August last year and found Strawberries in abundent supply all along the trail and hoped to do so again on this trip. Unfortunately the trail to Chester was closed due to Bear activity, so we did the Burstall Pass trail instead. The good news is that Burstall is also beautiful, and there were many berries to be found there as well!
• We saw this beautiful black Timber Wolf out for a walk on the side of the road to Sunshine. We were on our way to go hiking at Sunshine Meadows and obviously had to stop to appreciate this fellow.

 • We stopped for lunch while hiking at Sunshine Meadows and it wasn't long before this little thief showed up and wanted to join us. Whisky Jack's (gray jays) are renowned for their ability to find a free lunch!
